The Future of Financial Planning Isn’t AI

Artificial intelligence seems to be everywhere these days. Depending on who you ask, it’s either going to solve all of life’s problems or become Skynet and send Terminators back in time.

Personally? Am I afraid of AI? No.

Now, if my Alexa starts asking where Sarah Connor lives, we may have a different conversation. I might even start looking for John Connor just to be safe.

Until then, I’m a huge believer in AI.

At Magnolia Financial Group, we use AI every day. It helps us research complex topics, analyze information, compare strategies, summarize meetings, organize data, and complete tasks that once took hours in just a few minutes.

It’s an incredible tool.

Notice I said tool.

A framing hammer is an incredible tool, but it doesn’t build the house by itself. AI is much the same. It makes skilled professionals more efficient, more informed, and more productive. It doesn’t replace the judgment, experience, and relationships that truly define great financial planning.

Could AI build a retirement projection? Absolutely.

Could it compare tax strategies? Of course.

Could it explain the differences between investment options? Better than most textbooks.

Could it tell you whether you can retire at 60? Probably.

But can it help a husband and wife work through the emotions of retiring after forty years? Can it guide a family after losing a loved one? Can it help a business owner wrestle with the decision to sell the company they spent decades building?

That’s where AI reaches its limit.

Financial planning isn’t just about Artificial Intelligence. It’s about Emotional Intelligence.

AI can calculate whether you can retire.

Emotional Intelligence helps you determine whether you’re actually ready to retire.

AI can estimate how much is enough.

A financial planner helps you define what enough means for your family.

AI understands data.

A financial planner understands people.

The reality is that financial planning has never been about producing reports. It’s about educating families so they can make well-informed financial decisions with confidence. The numbers matter, but understanding the people behind those numbers matters even more.

The best financial planners don’t simply provide answers. They ask better questions.

Our role isn’t to tell clients what to do. It’s to educate them, explain their options, help them understand the tradeoffs, and provide the insight they need to make educated decisions that align with their goals, values, and what matters most.

AI can process information.

Emotional Intelligence processes people.

One recognizes patterns in data.

The other recognizes fear, excitement, uncertainty, and confidence.

One predicts outcomes.

The other understands what those outcomes actually mean to your family.

AI will continue getting smarter every year.

But empathy, trust, experience, and wisdom aren’t software updates. They’re earned by walking alongside families through life’s biggest milestones, unexpected challenges, and difficult decisions.

Ironically, I think AI will make great financial planners even more valuable.

Why?

Because if technology can handle the repetitive work, we get to spend more time doing what clients actually want from us: listening, educating, planning, coaching, and helping families make well-informed financial decisions with confidence.

That’s a future I’m excited about.

So no, I’m not worried about AI replacing financial planners.

I’m excited about AI making financial planners better.

At Magnolia Financial Group, we believe the future isn’t AI versus financial planners.

It’s AI + EI.

Artificial Intelligence powered by Emotional Intelligence.

Because AI can interpret the numbers.

But Emotional Intelligence helps people understand what those numbers mean for their lives.

And if I’m wrong, well, hopefully John Connor has a really good financial planner.
